What’s a ScLoHo?

What’s a ScLoHo?

At the end of 2016, I was preparing to launch a podcast version of the weekly articles I have been writing and  publishing on The Genuine ScLoHo website and this is the very first episode that you can also listen to. Here’s the link to this episode.   Now that we have all the details taken care of, here we go:

Kicking off a brand new year and a new dimension to this website, I thought it would be a good time to give you a bit of background information on What’s a ScLoHo? and who is this character…

This article (or podcast if you’re listening to this) is longer than they will be in the future.

First, some history. My name is Scott Howard and in the 1960’s my family moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana. In the 70’s my high school launched a radio station and that led me to working on the radio at the age of 16 part time.  After graduating, I was working full time in radio, on the radio in Marion and Kokomo, Indiana before returning to Fort Wayne where I was on the air at WMEE, owned by Federated Media.

While at WMEE I married a listener and we ended up having 3 kids, moving back to Kokomo and eventually Detroit when I was 26.  In Detroit I spent nearly 8 years at WMUZ, a 50,000 watt FM commercial Christian radio station.  This move to Detroit was my entry into the advertising and marketing world.  We would create advertising campaigns for our advertising partners and my primary job was to create these campaigns including writing and producing the ads.

I also trained others in our production department and we had a full staff of 5 commercial producers.  Eventually I returned to the air on WMUZ in Detroit, initially doing vacation fill-in and then took over the morning show for about a year.  I also spent about a year full time in sales at WMUZ before deciding to return to Indiana for family reasons.

Back in the Fort Wayne area, (actually Warsaw, Indiana at first) I worked part time on the air at country music WBTU before accepting a full time on air position at WFWI.  This was the early 90’s now and when WFWI decided to switch music formats, they asked me to move from afternoons to mornings on the new 92.3 The Fort.  I did this 6 months before I decided to walk away from radio and took a job in Warsaw where my wife and kids and I lived.

About 4 years later, my first wife and I are no longer married and my Dad had passed away so I moved back to Fort Wayne to help my Mom downsize and move forward with her life. It’s the summer of 1998 and I returned to radio full time for a few months as the program director of talk radio station WGL in Fort Wayne.  Due to unstable ownership I left full time radio again but never completely as I start doing weekends on WAJI ushering in the year 2000.

For the next 3 years I worked in a couple of different industries and to summarize, I know how to drive a forklift, manage a tool crib work in quality control and run a thermometer.   I also met and married my wife Kathy who introduced me to local coffee shops.

It was during one of those coffee shop visits that I noticed we were the only customers and outside was a guy dressed in a dirty pink chicken costume waving at passing cars.  I asked the owner what the chicken had to do with coffee and his response was, “I gotta do something”.  Clearly he was desperate to get customers.  We had a conversation about advertising and marketing and later as my wife and I were driving home, she said you ought to go back into advertising and marketing.  Apparently she and the coffee shop owner were both impressed with the common sense advise I offered.

Kathy and I talked about the pros and cons of my returning to radio.  She did not know me when I previously worked in radio and I told her about the challenges and opportunities and we prayerfully agreed to give it a go.  A few months later, in April 2003 I was hired by a group of radio stations in Fort Wayne that was known mostly as Summit City Radio as one of their advertising sales persons.

The ScLoHo name and identity was born during my 8 and a half years working at those radio stations.  It began as an email address and later when I began my online activity, it became my twitter handle and I even formed a marketing consulting practice with the ScLoHo name.

What does ScLoHo mean?  It’s pretty simple.  Even though I had never met another person with my name, Scott Howard until a few years ago, there are over 800 Scott Howard’s in the United States according to the website, HowManyOfMe.com.

If you were to Google Scott Howard, one of the top results was the character named Scott Howard, played by Michael J. Fox in the original Teenwolf movie.  While I’ve had a beard most of my adult life, I’m not a werewolf.  So I created a mashup of my first, middle and last names… If you take the first two letters of Scott, the first two letters of Louis and the first two letters of Howard, you have six letters, ScLoHo.  And it’s easy to pronounce too as a two syllable word, Sc-low, Hoe.

I jumped on the blogging bandwagon while I was still working for those other radio stations and was writing, editing and publishing articles every day on multiple blogs online.  Some of the articles were picked up nationally by the Wall Street Journal and other publications.  I was doing speaking and teaching engagements around town and around elsewhere too.  The subjects varied but the main topics were Media, Marketing, Branding and Advertising along with some on the personal side and about my city, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

2011, I was lured away from the radio stations I was working for which included WGL, Rock 104 and Wild 96 and started a full time position working for a website development firm.  It was a great learning experience and my friend and co-worker,  Kevin challenged me to tie the ScLoHo identity with my own name, Scott Howard.  See, for several years there were people who knew me as either Scott Howard or ScLoHo, but not both.  By October 2011 I was ready to consolidate all my online blogs and websites to a new domain.  Since the dot com and dot net versions of my name were taken, I bought the Scott Howard dot me domain and have been writing and publishing every single week.

By the way, after leaving the website development company I joined another radio station in town, then went to work full time for a national e-commerce company headquartered near Fort Wayne.  I managed the social media for all 5 of their brands.

In 2013, I accepted the position I have now with Federated Media.  I am a member of the WOWO radio sales team and also have all of the marketing resources available from our Federated Digital Services division.  For me it’s like a marriage of the best of both worlds that I have enjoyed… radio and online.

It was also a homecoming of sorts.  The building that houses WOWO and Federated Media also is home to other stations including WMEE where I worked on the air when I was 21 years old in 1981.  Two of my co-workers from those old days are still here too.

Over the weeks ahead, I’ll share some marketing and media insights, dip into some personal stories on occasion and pass along what I’ve learned from hundreds of others and continue to learn nearly every day.

Questions? Answers? Thoughts of nearly any kind are welcome.  You can find me online ScottHoward.me; on Twitter @ScLoHo; on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and a few other places online. Just Google ScLoHo, that’s S-C-L-O-H-O and you’ll probably find more of me.  Drop me a note via email too, Scott@ScLoHo.net.

It’s Not WHO YOU Know, It’s Who KNOWS YOU

The last few months I’ve noticed something that may have been going on longer than just the last few months.

Here’s that something:

The number of people who know me and see me face to face in “unplanned meets” has become substantial.

Let me define “unplanned meets“.

I fill my week with planned meetings such as a business meeting, lunch meeting, or even church is a planned meeting. Other times when I see someone that I know but we did not plan on being at the same place at the same time, that’s what I’m calling an “unplanned meet“.

Not everyone you meet is real

I’ve been back in my hometown of Fort Wayne for 18 1/2 years.  But it wasn’t until 2003 that I started working in the advertising sales world in Fort Wayne. Ten years later, 2013 was when I joined WOWO Radio and Federated Media.  Part of that job is to meet people. And while I’m sure that has been part of it, there are others that I’ve been having “unplanned meets” with that are not related to my working life.

Last week I was at the Fort Wayne Home and Garden Show and had a few people come up to me and say hi.  Not the, you look familiar, but I don’t know who you are kind of hi, but folks who remembered my name and details about the last time or even first time we met.

The week before I was attending a Fort Wayne Komets hockey game and a couple people did the same.  Sometimes it’s at a place I go to regularly but just as often it’s someplace I rarely show up at.

Apparently there is some kind of momentum that happens on a personal level that is similar to the kind of momentum that most businesses want to have happen with their advertising and marketing. It’s Not WHO YOU Know, but who KNOWS YOU that makes the difference in the success of your business and also in personal lives too.

It’s not a fame thing either.  A few years ago when my sister-in-law moved to town, she remarked that my wife and I must be famous because everywhere we went, people knew us.  No, we just took her to some of our favorite spots in this city and people at those places were familiar with us.

There was a time when these “unplanned meets” were rare.  Now it occurs several times each week.  People that I have not spoken with in years, or even decades are popping up.  Sometimes they are reaching out to me on Social Media, not Face to Face but that’s a bit different.

While I’ve been talking about my personal experience today, I’m just using it as an observation.  This is not really about me… It’s about the lesson all of us can take away from this observation and apply to our business and personal lives.

That lesson is it takes work and effort to build positive relationships.  Positive relationships where people make an effort to stop and say hi & talk with you when they see you unexpectedly.  Do it enough and with integrity and one day you will see the return in ways you never imagined.  You and your company can flourish if you build it on a strong foundation.

If you want some help and guidance, reach out to me.

The Christian Battlefield

I’m in the middle of reposting the 5 most shared articles I’ve published in the past 12 months.  As we get ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas, this reminder is from last November:

There is a video on social media that is calling out Starbucks for their choice of an all red cup for the season.  I won’t link to it but you can do your own searching and come up with it.

The guy in the video says that Starbucks hates Jesus.  Here, let me quote him directly,

Starbucks REMOVED CHRISTMAS from their cups because they hate Jesus

Sorry but this is so un-Christlike.

About a year ago, I reached out to a church inviting them to participate with our church in a project to benefit the neighbors in our neighborhood.  One lady, who was not a member of either church but is actively leading a Christian prayer group in the neighborhood, came up to me and told me I should not invite the other church because the other church supported homosexuality.  Her comments surprised me, and saddened me.  Sorry but this too is un-Christlike.

What is Christlike?

Instead of creating hate and division, how about showing grace and mercy?  Instead of judging with our human eyes, minds and hearts, how about helping by demonstrating a willingness to serve?

Saturday I was blessed to be part of a group of volunteers that raked leaves of 30 yards in the Frances Slocum neighborhood of Fort Wayne.  You can see more here.

Let me tell you how this works.  A few weeks before the Leaf Raking Day, we put announcements on social media, in the church and school newsletters and bulletins.  The event was open to anyone and everyone.  It was not limited to people connected to Holy Cross School or Church.  It was not limited to people in the Frances Slocum Neighborhood.

This is the 3rd year we have had this event and the concept is simple.  The concept is to be a blessing and be Christlike in giving of time and energy.

Of the 30 homes that had their leaves raked in preparation for the city of Fort Wayne street departments leaf collection next week, only 3 were requested.  Two from the church and one from the neighborhood association.  The rest were houses we did in the past or ones that we noticed needed help.

There was not “qualifying” involved.  We didn’t ask if they knew Jesus, if they were Christians, if they were poor, if they liked gay people, or if they were, well anything.

We just went to work.  About 50 volunteers ranging in age from 6 to 76.  After lunch I double checked to see if we got all the houses we were planning on raking and noticed that three were missed by the crew.  So a few of us who were left went and made sure those homes were taken care of too.

This is just a tiny example of being Christlike.  It was a blessing to those who needed help with their leaves.  And it was a blessing to our hearts as we served.

The Christian Battlefield isn’t fought in a coffee shop, or in a public forum.  It’s doing good, one person at a time, (sometimes in groups like the leaf raking project).  Who can argue with that?

Time to Apply for Penny Pitch 2016

The time is now for local charities to apply to be a chosen organization that will receive funds from WOWO Radio’s annual Penny Pitch fundraiser that will take place this fall.

Click here to get the details on how to apply and do it A.S.A.P.

This will be my 4th year as a WOWO insider, seeing how it all works and it is amazing.

Penny Pitch began in 1948 as a way for listeners to give their spare change, pennies, to help those who needed help locally.  Over the years it evolved to supporting local charities who would then use the generous donations for a specific need.

2013, my first year with WOWO listeners give over $87,000 to benefit Turnstone.

In 2014, $130,000 was raised and given to support Boomerang Backpacks.

2015 was another record year with over $141,000 donated by listeners and that amount was doubled by a local company to more than $280,000 that was divided among 4 organizations.

Media & Marketing Your Business in 2016

This week I was asked by my friend Kevin Mullett to sit on a panel for the Social Media/Marketing Breakfast that he emcee’s each month in Fort Wayne, Indiana along with Ric Johnson from Xymmetrix.

The topic was Online Reputation Management which included a great discussion and plenty of advice. This monthly event is 5 years strong and if you want details, contact me.

But what really struck me recently was the way media has changed over the past 5 years and even the 10 years before.  Some of the members of the audience weren’t involved in any form of media, online or otherwise 15 years ago.

From a marketing perspective, these millennials don’t know about life without the web.  Or they have lived a majority of their lives with the web.

Compare that with the 40 year old or 55 year old business person who has to make marketing and advertising decisions to keep their company alive and growing for the next 15 years.

Before 2000 a minority of businesses had a website.  Social Media really started to take off with MySpace from 2005 through 2008.  By 2009 Facebook became the largest Social Media platform and others have come and gone while even more have come and evolved as they discovered their niche.   In researching this article, I discovered that MySpace has a Facebook account!

Social media platforms have allowed all of us to be both consumers of content along with creators of content.  Facebook has launched a live video capability to compete with the others that offer similar options. This is vastly different than the media choices we had before.  One of the differences is the size of the audiences doesn’t compare.

Traditional media included T.V., radio, newspapers, magazines.  Lots of advertising options in traditional media.  Plus other traditional advertising options included yellow page phone books, billboard, direct mail and flyers/posters.

There has been an explosion of choices we have as consumers to get the entertainment and information we want and need.  Instead of settling for summer reruns or special summer seasons of TV shows, I will go to my Amazon Prime Video account and stream movies or shows I want to watch.  I can use my Google Chromecast to watch on my TV.  Others are using Netflix or Hulu or who knows what to watch video entertainment.

We have the ability as consumers to ignore the traditional media and still be informed and entertained.

However many of us don’t ignore traditional media.  I work in the radio industry and also online world.  Over 90% of Americans listen to a radio station every week.

We just got radio rating information and my station WOWO continues to lead the pack with more adult listeners than anyone.  Overall WOWO is one of 4 stations that has over 100,000 weekly listeners and 98% are over the age of 18.

WOWO is still a mass media that produces results for the advertising partners. Sadly that is not always true of all radio stations for a variety of reasons.

What about the online advertising options?  Technology has allowed us to pinpoint the people that a business wants as customers, anywhere in the world and deliver advertising marketing messages to them.  It’s sort of mindblowing.  But I’ve seen it in action with my advertising partners.  I’ll delve into some of those details next week.

Bottom line is simple:

  1. You need to invite customers to do business with you.
  2. There are people who will become your customers if you invite them.  They are spending their money every week on stuff they need and want.
  3. I can help you make that connection to invite them to spend money with you.

Want to know more?  Let’s meet.
